In a recent case handled by his office, an ID thief was able to purchase five
luxury cars, expensive jewelry and clothes totaling more than $200,000. He did so using the name and good credit
of a Sarasota man. The shopping spree took just 15 days.
Identity theft is becoming so common that the U.S. Secret Service, the
agency responsible for investigating the crime, won't even look into
a Tampa Bay area case unless a victim's losses total more than $10,000.
The U.S. attorney's office sets the threshold, which applies not only
to identity theft but to all white-collar crime. In some cities, such
as Miami, New York and Los Angeles, the loss has to be more than $50,000
to get federal attention. "There's not enough agents, not enough
federal prosecutors to go around to investigate all this crime,'' says
the Secret Service special agent in charge of the Tampa Bay area.
Our most active services involve white-collar crime including Identity Theft.
The bad news is that identity theft can be a nightmare. Victims have been turned down for
credit, mortgages and even jobs because someone else ran their credit into the ground. And in a worst-case
scenario, victims have been arrested for crimes committed by the thief.
One consumer even wrote about his experience with Identity Theft:
"This is a crime that can completely
disrupt your life. It is degrading and demeaning to be accused of
being an irresponsible dead-beat and be forced to correct something
that was caused by the acceptance of the social security number, by
a creditor, as the only primary means of identification required to
do business with them. We found out the hard way that when a creditor
clears an account, that account is assigned to a third party collection
agency for recycling. The third party collection agency would then
place this same cleared account back into our credit report. It was
usually listed as a charged off or collection account. Third party
collection agencies are nasty, rude, mean people to deal with. We
have cleared our credit records at least four times now and dealt
with 14 collection agencies so far. These previously cleared accounts
kept reappearing in our reports."
Computer security is enough of a worry that
Microsoft views it as a threat to its continued success. An endless
roster of security holes allows cyber-thieves to fill up their buffers
with credit-card numbers and corporate secrets. It’s easier to vandalize
a Web site than to program a remote control. Entertainment moguls boil
in their hot tubs as movies and music are swapped, gratis, on the Internet.
Consumers fret about the loss of privacy. Computer viruses proliferate
and mutate faster than they can be named. You may now start to understand
